The UAPASTF is a task force based in the United States made up of pesticide registrants working under the task force principles outlined in the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. While the UAPASTF is based in the United States, the work of the task force is global in nature; in fact the UAPASTF was formed primarily to respond to the recommendations of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Working Party on Pesticides (WPP) Drone / Unmanned Aerial Spray Systems (UASS) Subgroup (Drone Subgroup) outlined in a 2019 publication (OECD WPP Drone Subgroup State of Knowledge ). UAPASTF alignment with the work of the OECD WPP Drone Subgroup is critical to achieving the goals of the UAPASTF.
The primary goals of the UAPASTF are to generate and submit regulatory data to relevant governmental agencies including those represented in the OECD WPP Drone Subgroup and its member countries, and to engage with governmental agencies and other entities around the world in advocacy to support the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) for crop protection, public health pest management, and other uses of pesticide products. With respect to data generation, the UAPASTF focuses on generating data for submission to pesticide regulatory authorities to inform estimates for off-site movement, determine potential operator/handler exposure, and assess crop residue contribution to human dietary exposure in risk assessment and regulatory approval processes. Generated data will also contribute toward the evaluation of existing regulatory models and/or the development of new UAV-focused models that estimate exposures in risk assessment and regulatory approval processes.
